As you may have heard, the 2021 Havelock Chili Festival has been cancelled.
We are very aware how much the Festival is looked forward to by all of you. We have made this decision after long, hard consideration. But the odds are stacked against us this year and we cannot bulldoze our way to a success this time. We are in dire need of dedicated volunteers to plan and execute a Festival. The group who has put of Festivals in the past is tired, worn out. Please consider joining the Chili Festival Committee and putting your hearts and hands into making more Festivals possible in the future. We truly need your help.
As we began to see that participation by vendors and sponsors was much, much lower than in years past, the realization that a perfect storm of negative things was impacting the Festival. For example, our Friday night Chicken Wing Contest was almost certain to fail! The price of a 40 lb box went from $83 in 2019 to over $143 in 2021. Besides, by June 30, we only had one wing cook signed up.
Vendors who have participated with us for many years were calling to say they were no longer in business or unable to join us because other Festivals had cancelled and they could not earn enough to go on to ours.
We felt the impact of fewer sponsorships because several long-term partners have been badly affected by the DOT projects going on along Hwy 70.
Please know full well that the Chili Festival Committee is working to overcome these and many more obstacles that have shown up this year. We look forward to people getting back to work, to the economy being better for everyone. But let’s be honest: we cannot go forward without your help. If you value the Havelock Chili Festival as much as you tell everyone, join us. We need your help. Havelock must support it’s Festival.

In 1981, the Commanding General at Marine Corp Air Station Cherry Point mentioned the concept of developing a festival that would provide his Marines and their families with an opportunity to connect with their community. Based on his vision, the International Chili Society Cook-off concept was born. Previous Havelock Chili Festivals had competitors compete from New Jersey, Colorado, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, South Carolina and Florida as well as North Carolina.
