2019 Cooks Letter

  

Dear Prospective Cooks:

It is time for the 38th Annual Havelock Chili Festival. This year’s event will take place on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, 2019 in Walter B Jones Park in downtown Havelock. The Chicken Wing competition will be on Friday night, and the Chili competition will be on Saturday. There is no sanctioning body for this year’s event and everyone is encouraged to enter. There is no entry fee for either contest, however all contestants must complete an application, and all chili contestants are required to provide five (5) gallons of chili to be sold during the day on Saturday. 

Wings will be provided by the festival, no outside chicken wings will be allowed. Contestants must provide all cooking equipment to include utensels, tables, cookers, a fire extinguisher, and cleaning stations per Health Department regulations. Serving containers, spoons, and napkins will be provided by the festival. A cooks meeting will be held at 3:00 PM Friday afternoon, and initial issue of wings and paper products will be made at that meeting. Wings must be available for sale by 5:00 PM at the start of the festival. A box will be issued for Three (3) wings of the contestants choosing for “JUDGING” and will be turned in at 6:00 PM. Tickets for wings will be sold by the festival, “NO MONEY WILL BE COLLECTED BY CONTESTANTS”. Details for collecting tickets will be provided at the cooks meeting at 3:00 PM.

Chili may be prepared on site, or prepared ahead of time and served on during the festival on Saturday. Chili may contain beans or pasta, make it the way you like! Contestants must provide all cooking equipment to include utensels, tables, cookers, a fire extinguisher, and cleaning stations per Health Department regulations. Serving containers, spoons, and napkins will be provided by the festival. Condiments are the responsibility of the contestant. A cooks meeting will be held at 9:00 AM Saturday morning, and initial issue of paper products will be made at that meeting. Serving will begin at 10:00 AM and continue until you run out. A 16 oz cup will be provided to turn in for “JUDGING” at 12:00 noon. The judging cup can be either from the 5 gallons of serving chili, or you may prepare a separate pot just for judging. Tickets for chili will be sold by the festival, “NO MONEY WILL BE COLLECTED BY CONTESTANTS”. Details for collecting tickets will be provided at the cooks meeting at 9:00 AM.

Awards for both chili and wings will be presented on Saturday at 4:00 PM. Details of prizes and applications are available online at www.chilifestival.org. Get your church, civic organization, club or fire station together, or just steal your mother’s best chili recipe and enter to see who makes the best chili in Havelock. All proceeds are used to support charitable organizations in the Havelock community. Event hours are Friday 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
